Le Fantôme de l'Opéra est un roman de Gaston Leroux publié en 1910 (illustré par André Castaigne). Il est inspiré de faits réels qui se sont produits à l'Opéra Garnier dans la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle et de l'incendie du Bazar de la Charité qui s'est produit le 5 mai 1897 et qui fit 135 morts.
Histoire
Des phénomènes étranges se produisent à l'opéra. Un lustre s'effondre pendant une représentation, un machiniste est retrouvé pendu... Mais le personnage dont certains affirment avoir vu la tête squelettique ne semble être qu'un humain ; en effet les directeurs de l'opéra se voient réclamer 20 000 francs par mois de la part d'un certain Fantôme de l'Opéra qui exige aussi que la loge numéro 5 lui soit réservée. Mais plus étrange encore, une jeune chanteuse orpheline nommée "Christine Daaé", recueillie par la femme de son professeur de chant, entend son nom pendant la nuit et elle dirait même avoir vu et rencontré le fameux Fantôme de l'Opéra.

Le rôle premier féminin a été écrit spécialement pour la voix de la femme d'Andrew Lloyd Webber à l'époque : la chanteuse Sarah Brightman.La première a eu lieu au théâtre : Her Majesty's Theatre en septembre 1986, et il y est encore aujourd'hui (en 2007).
The Phantom of the Opera a depuis été dans plus de 90 villes.
The Phantom of the Opera est visible en 2004 dans six pays simultanément : au Royaume-Uni, aux États-Unis (deux troupes : une à Broadway, une autre en tournée), au Danemark, en Allemagne, en Hongrie, au Japon et en Espagne.
Un film : Le Fantôme de l'Opéra directement inspiré de la comédie musicale est sorti fin 2004.
Depuis le 9 janvier 2006, The Phantom of the Opera est premier sur la liste des comédies musicales les plus jouées en continu à Broadway, devant Cats (7 485 représentations).
